School workplaces face contemporary challenges.

Good work design, strengthening management capacity, and highlighting social contexts in school workplaces can help mitigate the risks these challenges may pose to staff mental health.

Schools are unique workplaces, hosting communities of students, families, and staff. Work in contemporary schools is complex, multifaceted and evolving, and the one constant is ongoing high demands on staff. Designing work to attract, retain and develop great staff is central in enabling schools to flourish as workplaces and learning communities.

At Compassionate Schools, we believe school leaders and staff can work together and [re]design for better work in classrooms, teams, and across schools. The authority, capacity and in-house expertise is just waiting to be tapped in each school community.

Good work design = better work practice = mentally healthy school workplaces.

Who is Melinda

Melinda is an organisational psychologist and NESA accredited teacher, currently completing her PhD exploring personal and workplace factors shaping school staff wellbeing. Melinda has established her consultancy, Compassionate Schools to empower leaders and staff to engage with better work design in classrooms, teams and schools to foster mentally healthy school workplaces.

Based on her published research around Australian school staff’s experience of traumatic stress following critical incidents, and her ongoing 1:1 support of principals and school staff, Melinda brings deep knowledge of how schools operate and combines this with an Australian evidence-based approach to supporting good work by design in schools.

Melinda’s experience includes working with groups (leader networks, whole school teams (single and multiple schools), leadership teams, wellbeing teams) and individuals (principals, wellbeing leaders, teachers) to support, protect and promote mental health including whole school wellbeing and trauma, grief and loss in schools.

“Disengaged, stressed-out employees do not perform at their best … a better approach is to create healthier and more sustainable jobs through good work design.”
